Several major Hollywood films were adapted from the story of Smith and Libby. Join us as we screen three of these films this fall including Reckless (1935)
Join Reynolda for a viewing of the film, Reckless (1935). Directed by Victor Fleming, the movie showcass a dazzling range of talent: actors Jean Harlow and William Powell, director Victor Fleming (a few years before Gone with the Wind and Wizard of Oz), writers David O. Selznick and Joseph L. Mankiewicz, and composers Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II.
Dale M. Pollock received a BA in Anthropology from Brandeis University and a MS in Communications from San Jose State University. He has served as head film critic for Daily Variety, chief entertainment correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, and Dean of the School of Filmmaking at the (then) North Carolina School of the Arts. Pollock was awarded an Endowed Professorship in Film in his name at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts School of Filmmaking in 2014 and is the 2016 recipient of the UNC Board of Governors Award for Teaching Excellence.
Dr. David Lubin is Charlotte C. Weber Professor of Art at Wake Forest University where he teaches American Visual Art and Film History. He received his Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale and has written numerous books including Shooting Kennedy: JFK and the Culture of Images, which won the Smithsonian Institution’s Charles Eldredge Prize. He is also the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and several research residencies.
