In the spirit of art collecting, join Reynolda Reads to discuss a story of intrigue and art. B.A. Shapiro’s The Collector’s Apprentice takes us to Europe in the 1920s, following Paulien Mertens, a nineteen-year-old accused of stealing her family’s fortune and art collection. To escape arrest, she creates a new identity, the French Vivienne Gregsby.
When she meets American art collector Edwin Bradley, he gives her a job as his assistant and throws her into a world of art and passion in Paris. Shortly after, her fiancé, a con-artist and the real mastermind behind the heist, returns, Paulien finds herself arrested for the murder of Edwin Bradley. This story is very loosely based on the lives of art collector Albert Barnes and his assistant, Violette de Mazia, also an art collector and his assistant.
Please come ready to discuss this riveting novel that will engage an art lover’s imagination.
