Photographer Danny Lyon documented the Civil Rights movement through intimate images of musicians, activists, and cultural icons. His photographs displayed in Flash Point (on view through January 3, 2027) reflect the era’s music, social justice, and political activism. Lyon brought raw emotion and humanity to his portraits, and Chimes of Freedom: Folk Singers & Fellow Travelers addresses the complex subjects of Lyon’s work, interwoven with the music that fueled the movement.

Through contemporary interpretations of music associated with Harry Belafonte, Bob Dylan, and other performers connected to the Civil Rights Movement, Chimes explores the cultural landscape in which Lyon’s photographs were made. The performance will reflect on a moment when musicians, activists, and artists were engaged in a shared project of witnessing and social change.

Featuring Flash Point co-curator and Betsy Main Babcock deputy director Phil Archer, celebrated singer-songwriter Joseph Terrell as Bob Dylan, and Oscar- and Grammy-nominated musician Joshuah Brian Campbell as Harry Belafonte, this performance highlights the creative work and storytelling of a pivotal moment in American history.
